Lymphedema Treatment
What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is an accumulation of fluid in a body part which causes swelling. The arms and legs are most often affected. Primary lymphedema is due to a problem with the lymph vessels at birth. Secondary lymphedema can arise from an infection, or from surgical procedures such as breast removal or radiation for cancer.
What does Lymphedema Treatment Involve?
CCWC physical therapists perform manual lymph drainage. They perform lymphedema massage, a gentle, soothing technique that moves excess lymph fluid out of swollen areas to promote normal drainage.
Our lymphedema program includes:
- Manual lymph drainage
- Compression therapy to decrease swelling
- Exercises to increase circulation of lymphatic fluid
- Skin and nail care
- Self-care instruction
Goals of lymphedema therapy:
- Use unaffected lymph vessels and lymphatic pathways
- Decongest swollen body parts, eliminate fibrotic tissue
- Avoid (re)accumulation of lymph fluid
- Prevent/eliminate infection
- Maintain normal or near-normal size of extremity
- Teach self-care so patient can keep swelling from recurring
